NEW BUILDS: Overstocking Already, Because this Lime AMX Was Irresistible!

Lord hep me, I can’t stop! Even after bumping the muscle car fleet up to 96 cars I still have more; in fact, I have so many now that I can’t possibly race them all. A while ago I said my orange AMX was going to be “the last muscle car.” I did do a couple of “Replacements” more recently, but that means bouncing a car from the fleet. In this case, I’m just adding one I can’t do anything with, because I couldn’t resist it! When Auto World reissued the AMC AMX yet again recently in lime green with matching bumpers, I had to have it! I actually bought two of them; one races in my Super Stock Fleet, but I liked it so much I had to have another for the customized Muscle Fleet!

All I did was fit this one with Slot Car Central shortened axles and a set of Vincent ARE wheels with Road Race Replica tires: I did nothing more because it didn’t need anything more! It came out of the package so cool I couldn’t do anything else to improve it! And even though this is one of the few muscle cars that uses the short wheelbase, it still takes those full sized tires with ease; not a shim needed on this one, I just screwed it together and put it on the track!

So now what? I don’t have any more room, and since I already have 3 AMX’s the in fleet and I’m not inclined to replace one, I guess this one will just sit around and might rotate in during a tournament if another car goes out with a motor fire or something. At least I have to give it some Lore: this is, of course, a 390 powered car (because who would buy an AMX with less?), and is a restoration and modification of a high-optioned car sold new in Arizona and thus never rusted. “Hellfire” is owned and raced by Hank “Roadhog” Raney, who is also a native of Arizona: Mesa, to be exact. The transmission has been upgraded to a GM Muncie and the rear end to a Dana, but the engine is all AMC save for the custom-ground Isky camshaft and the carburetor, also an upgrade to a Carter 750cfm. “Roadhog” is another aggressive driver who lives up to his name, but he must back off at some point because his car is pristine and he keeps it that way!

“Roadhog” Raney and “Hellfire” are up for qualifying for the 1986 season, as he has never raced at Drag City before, but with a rig like this, there’s little doubt he’ll make it through the time trials with a shot at the lineup! We’ll see what happens when the time comes!

  1. It is a great color on that car and I’m seeing an expansion needed. Perhaps the owners of Drag City need to set up a sister race site in a neighboring town to Wardglenn!
