SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!!! The 64-Pack Sports Car Skirmish – FULL VIDEO!!!

Fresh out of post-production work, Drag City Productions presents its most ambitious video yet of the full-fleet “64-pack” Sports Car Skirmish, run on April 2-3 2021 at the Mark IV track!

All 64 cars squared off for 2 full days of 5-lap eliminations, with the simplest possible rules: cars are paired up based on their 60 time trial performance, the faster of the 2 cars advances to the next round, the slower gets eliminated. This format is harsh-there’s no second chances-but it does allow some of the slower cars a chance to move forward, rather than just always letting the fastest cars move onto the next heat.

There was a significant rule change: by popular demand, the “3 Strikes” rule was done away with, and in fact a rule that was essentially the opposite of it was implemented: now, instead of each car having 2 deslots or crashes before getting a DNF, each car was required to continue to run until it completed the five laps, regardless of how many tries it took! Needless to say, for some of the less experienced drivers or cars with clumsier handling, it was a long weekend!

INTRO: OVERVIEW OF THE FLEET!

You will note immediately that this video is different; it liberally splices in actual footage taken from a variety of sources, including some in-car camera footage, spectator video from various racing tracks, an excellent period documentary, and at least one quite famous Hollywood movie from the past. The question I put to you is this: is using footage of real racing to enhance a scale model video awesome, or is it cheating?

Feel free to opine in the comments section, and either way, enjoy the ride as 64 vintage sports and racing cars face off on the challenging Mk. IV raceway to the “driving” beat of a late ‘80’s Euro techno-industrial classic!

THE 64-PACK SPORTS CAR SKIRMISH!

The biggest news of the event were the results, an upset overall victory by a car that’s never won before. The #60 Lola GT Mk IV vanquished the “King of the Hill” #18 Cheetah (which still took 2nd place) to win the tournament, while the 3rd place finisher was also one that had never placed so high, the #23 ’71 Corvette Stingray. Overall a surprising result from a thrilling race!
