There is something very strange about the Auto World releases of the Ford G.T. 40 and the Cobra Daytona Coupe…that being that they are impossible to find! Auto World just put out release 31 of their slot car line, and to my knowledge, the last time these two cars were seen was release 6! Hey Auto World, what gives??? Especially with the release of the ultimate racing movie “Ford VS Ferrari” early in 2020, interest in the G.T.40 has never been higher, and yet for some inexplicable reason AW seems unwilling or unable to give us “represses” of these two cars. That leaves enthusiasts like me to fight over the few early 2000’s releases out there on ebay, and fight we do, to the tune of $75 for this one, and it came on a junk chassis so I didn’t even get that! Fortunately this is my 3rd (and probably final) Cobra Daytona Coupe-they only made it in 4 liveries-and I suspect this is the hardest one to find because it’s the one I’ve seen for sale the least often. As rare as it is, its got nothing on the real thing, since only 6 Daytona coupes were ever built. Miraculously, all 6 have survived and, with the amazing discovery of the “missing” one on the estate of late music producer Phil Spector some years ago (that’s a story you gotta read to believe; how’d you have liked to have made that barn find???) it was a real treat to see all 6 survivors reunited at the Goodwood Revival in 2015.
In spite of all the outlay it took to get it, I’m not disappointed! It came out great, with a set of gray finish Road Race Replica wheels and low-profile silicones on an uber-fast brand spankin’ new aftermarket Ultra-G chassis. It looks just like the real thing, ready to go out and find a Ferrari to eat! As most enthusiasts know, the primary diet of the Pete Brock-designed Daytona coupe was its concurrent Italian stallion with a similar silhouette, the Ferrari 250 GTO, perennially the world’s most valuable car. Fortunately, I have the other side of this face-off ready to go as well…
