Meet the Fleet – Muscle Cars: ’65 Pontiac GTO

  • BODY: Dash Motorsports
  • WHEELS & TIRES: Road Race Replicas

Another of my small selection of bodies by Dash Motorsports, and another one of the best; this body has been made in at least two-dozen paint schemes, but none of them compare to this one in deep irridescent “electric purple.” I have to admit that purple is my favorite color, and this particular shade is the best of the best. Since it is similar to that used on some copies of the Matchbox Superfast #22 Pontiac Grand Prix, I couldn’t resist adding to my “purple Poncho” theme in spite of the very high price I paid for this body.

Like most Dash bodies (not all), it’s a little smaller than most of the Aurora and Auto World bodies, and in particular it’s quite narrow. Though I originally had it fitted with a set of Crager Sports, I didn’t like the way they stuck out from the sides of the car, so I reconfigured it with these #871 narrow wheels and tires from RRR. I don’t know if the reduced friction from the tires’ smaller footprint had anything to do with it, but what I wound up with is a car that is not only exceptionally fast, but handles exceptionally well-exactly the opposite of what you would expect from a narrow-track, narrow tire configuration.

I can’t explain it; maybe it’s something with the geometry. Maybe it was built on a Wednesday. Or maybe its just because it’s a Pontiac GTO! Whatever the reason, this gorgeous ’65 is one of my fastest and most formidable performers, a holy terror on the track! With the nickname “Bad Intentions” and driven by a pilot with the intimating handle of “Snake” Skeates, everything about this car tells competitors that it is not to be trifled with. And with that gleaming glass-like finish, you know this is one that’s driven away from the track to cruise the hot spots as the sun goes down, the back seat laden with trophies from the day’s victories!
