MEV: the Wait

One of the bad things about ordering essentially custom made slot car bodies from a small manufacturer is waiting to get them! I’ll be lucky if I have my latest order of MEV Originals by X-mas, but since they were bought with October’s funds I’m going to profile the 3 I bought here as best I can using the only info available to me, the pictures from their website.

Of course the coolest thing about ordering from MEV is being able to pick your colors! It might feel a little bit like shopping for a real new car back in the golden days when every manufacturer had a pallet of 20 or more paint colors (even more if you count 2-tones), half a dozen interior colors and as many interior materials, unlike these here modern times when you get to choose between white, black, silver, gray, and one ugly shade of dark red or one ugly shade of medium blue.

Yep, we sure have made progress, haven’t we?

Anyway…The Road Crew will be nearly completed by this order (after these arrive only 2 more cars will join), so here’s what’s coming…someday…

In chronological order by model year:

  1. 1950 Oldsmobile 88 coupe

Shown here in a medium green, I was planning to order mine in white but changed my mind and decided on black instead, since I only have 2 black cars in the Road Crew. I then ordered a set of their 5-lug reverse wheels in RED, and once it gets all put together it will ride on a set of Joe Skylark wide whitewalls! How’s that for a Rockabilly Rave-up??

  • 1962 Chevy Bel-Air wagon

I love old wagons and, of course, I was into them before being into them was cool (I mean, weren’t you??) The ’61 and ’62 full size Chevys were awesome cars, and since I’ve already got a copy of MEV’s ’61 “bubbletop” coupe, I figured I’d add this one, making it the 3rd wagon in the Road Crew along with the Aurora ’62 Ford Country Squire and the ’59 Buick LeSabre, another MEV Original. Their website shows it in teal but I ordered mine in sky blue, and she will ride on those same MEV 5 lug reverses in a matching color with stock Aurora tires, giving it a hubcap-less “back in the day” look.

  • 1965 Pontiac Catalina

Rounding out the trio is another awesome ‘60’s Poncho. Pontiac built some of the most exciting cars of the 60’s and the big ones-the Catalinas, Bonnevilles, and Star Chiefs-are amongst my favorites, so I just hadda buy this one! While it is shown on the website in an unattractive (IMHO) bright yellow, I ordered mine in teal-the same shade they show on the ’62 wagon above. This one gets stock shiny chrome Aurora T-Jet wheels and tires, unless, of course, a set of Jel Claws becomes necessary to roll that power on!

Like I alluded too earlier, financial necessity is forcing a slow down on acquisitions due to the out of control inflation brought to us by Beijing Biden; with 3 bags of groceries costing $100 and a tank of gas over $60 I’m now running down the till much faster than before, and I’m not going to dig into savings for the sake of my hobby, so posts here are going to start getting fewer and farther between. I am hoping to turn my attention back to the diorama and perhaps finally start working on some landscaping and ground cover, which are things that shouldn’t cost too much, and will be a fun way to occupy my time. Other than that, I’ll be at the track racing on the weekends; another big Muscle Car Tournament is coming for Halloween!

  1. These three will make great additions and nice choice. That olds and wagon are of course great and really cool and surprising models. I’m looking forward to hearing about the diorama and will share pictures of mine. Now that the weather is turning cooler, I’ll be working more on that!
