Celebrating Leap Year With The Super Stocks / “The Car Chase Channel” Becomes A Reality!

My lineup
Your humble blogger finally got a beard trim!

Happy February 29th! On this weird date I plan to hang out with my buddy Shanon after work, and here is a look at what we’ll be doing if I can get out of the office at a decent enough hour to make that happen! All these pics are from last Saturday, when we finally got a weekend without snow, but tonight’s racing should look at lot like it, and it looks pretty good!

So on that Saturday we initially had our usual music (hard rock or 80’s “old wave”) running on YouTube on his living room TV as background noise, but while taking a break from the track I decided to peruse my friend’s recent connection to PlutoTV. I find this new service (well, at least its new to me, I only found out about it a while ago) to be quite cool, showing as it does so many of the old B&W classic TV shows I grew up watching as reruns on weekday mid-day TV during summer vacation. While surfing through the channels on PlutoTV, I was stunned by the realization of an idea that I had way back in the early 90’s. It was around that time that the “car chase” thing really took off in California; for a while there it seemed like there was a live car chase on the news almost every week. I remember telling people in 1992 and 93 that what this country needed was a “car chase channel,” a TV network dedicated to all car chases all the time.

I thought I was joking!

Fast forward 33 years and here we are! PlutoTV has an entire channel dedicated to it: car chases 24/7/365! Its almost all rebroadcasts of past “live” news events with an occasional real live one thrown in whenever one happens…and believe me, as stupid as it sounds in this era of kill switches and cameras on every corner, you still seen clowns trying to outrun the cops! And it won’t surprise you that over 90% of them are from Southern California! Where else can you find such a combination of endless roads, endless cars, and titanic stupidity?!

Crazy shit! Anyway, it made for some fun background noise while Shanon and I had a car chase of our own on his kitchen table! Racing with a friend is fun, and our respective fleets of cars sure look purty gleaming under the LED bulbs!

Too fast for this tight track: my maroon Riviera against Shanon’s beige Bel-Air; these cars look great together but are are fast enough that they are better suited to Drag City where they can stretch their legs

  1. Wow, Shannon has started a very nice fleet! Those are some nice cars and no doubt his skills as a racer are getting pretty darn good! This will make for some great racing! I can’t say I’m surprised that there is a Car Chase channel. I lost all interest in network TV at the dawn of the age of “reality” tv.

    1. When I said “We need a car chase channel” in 1992 everyone laughed because, like, yeah, that would really happen? I guess that was before the lowest common denominator became the norm.
