Over the last several days the summer temperatures here have soared to nearly 100 degrees. What better time to spend weekends and weekday evenings down in the cool basement at the track? Thus over the last 3 days, I have wrapped up the first-ever muscle car races with 3 groups of 32 cars! This was “GROUP C”, a rumble of the “heavy hitters,” some of the fastest cars in the fleet; old favorites and new arrivals showed up at the track for a showdown in the evenings.

In spite of the sweltering temperatures, the crowd braved the heat and the drivers braved the risk of failed radiators and blown tires to show off their ground-pounding machines, and it was quite a show! Although several of the winningest drivers in the class made their plays, the tournament win went to another driver who has often been in the finals but never clinched the tournament trophy-until now!

The “final battle” came down to a face-off between two big-block Chevy Chevelles! “The Candyman,” the candy green ’67 Mailbu SS run by Flint “Fireball” Frazier, made it all the way to this vaunted position but came in 4/10ths of a second behind “The Landlord,” the ’70 SS of Oscar “Outlaw” Obermann, giving Obermann his first tournament win after several times near the winner’s circle. Coming in a respectable 3rd was one of the fastest veterans at the track, Roy “Railbender” Ruskin, who’s gold ’70 Olds 442 “Low Flyer” turned in the fastest race time of the event in elimination round 3. Fine showings by veteran racers, some with rebuilt winners and others with new cars, were crowd favorites in the same semi-final elimination round but didn’t quite advance to the final elimination.

So where to from here, dear readers? Well with the heat the way it is, your HB will be spending plenty of time in the basement over the next several weeks, so maybe there’ll be some new diorama changes, and it feels like a sports car race can’t be far behind either! Stay tuned for more spills, thrills, and heat-induced chills from Drag City!

That trailer is pretty cool and a fine addition! I’m glad your keeping cool with all this hot racing. This looks great!!!
