Meet the Fleet – Sportscars: AC Cobra 427SC

  • BODY: Dash Motorsports
  • WHEELS & TIRES: Road Race Replicas

The companion to my first Dash 427SC, and just as expensive to acquire. Since I bought this duo I’ve seen more and more of these bodies showing up for sale, but at the time I bought them in mid 2020 they were very hard to come by and competition for them was fierce. Although I treat this car with “kid gloves” due to the obviously fragility which is the inevitable downside of its elaborate detail, this car is fast as hell! It is actually one of the best performing sports cars in the entire fleet, which is only appropriate, considering that back in its day there wasn’t anything on a racing track that stood a chance against this car. In the annals of sports car racing, the 427 Cobra truly was king.

They were as unforgiving as they were unrelenting: driving one of these beasts on a racing track was a daunting task, one not for the faint of heart: no surprise for the car that maintained the title of the quickest 0-60 street legal car ever made well into the 1980’s In fact, the difficulty in handling them was the only thing that gave the competition even a ghost of a chance: many men who attempted to open up the 427SC in anger didn’t live to tell about it.

Dane Dunbar is not one of those men; he’s learned to tame the beast, although knows to respect it. This black original 1966 model is named “The Black Prince.” Nicknamed “Drifter”, Dunbar is no stranger to driving his 427 on the street, and has been seen not only cruising the canyon roads south of Drag City Raceway but has even been known to drive the car to the track for competition. Perhaps “Snake Charmer” would be a better name for the native Californian, who is not only a seasoned racer but also a former semi-pro body builder. That kind of muscle is what it takes to be able handle 400HP in a car weighing about the same as VW Bug with a pre-war suspension design. Come to think of it, perhaps “Madman” would be an even more appropriate nickname!
