In the aftermath of my “cork shrinkage” that I described in the post called “MAKING WAVES” (June 10 2021) I’m experimenting with using brown modeling clay not only to cover some of the damage, but extending it to surround the bases of the palm trees to make them look at bit less “stuck on” and more realistic.

Right from the beginning in building this blog, I admitted that I was not a serious scale modeler; I’m interested in the cars and the track, and to a slightly lesser extent the buildings and the people. But, as in real life, I’m having a hard time getting excited about landscaping; the flora and the fauna, and even more so the rocks and dirt, don’t really excite me all that much. Still, there’s no denying that doing the landscape right is what separates a toy layout from a true diorama.

This is only the embryonic beginning as I see what I can do with what I have before looking at buying stuff I don’t have and taking this up a step farther. There’s no denying that, thought I will keep adding elements where ever I can, the scenery is crying out for improvement, so it’s time to start spending at least a little bit of time on the substrate.

We’ll see how it goes! Further posts on this topic as developments warrant!
That looks like that will be a good solution for some of the issues that you had with the cork and stability. I do like the landscaping part and find that once I get into it the more I like it. For me, while the trains are the primary focus, the landscaping has been come a more and more important aspect to accentuate the trains. I have enjoyed creating the whole world though admittedly with the onset of summer, I haven’t made much progress lately. Good Luck Bud!
