- BODY: Aurora Model Motoring
- WHEELS & TIRES: Road Race Replicas
When I found out Model Motoring made a ’67 GTO I couldn’t wait to get my hands on one; it’s a beautifully proportioned body that looks exactly like the real thing. I’m a big fan of ‘60’s Ponchos, and though I tend to like the barges (Catalinas and Bonnevilles) best, when it comes to GTO’s, the ’66 and ’67 are my favorites. This orange one was the first one I ordered, and when it arrived I affixed a chassis to it with no muss, no fuss: no shims, no grinding, no drama. That’s partly because I fitted it with the awesome low profile tires from Road Race Replicas, which dressed a set of RRR wheels in the style they sell as “Bullets” and which I call A.R.E. Torque Thrusts. What I got out of it was one of the fastest, best handling, and most predictable members of my muscle car fleet. This car has won several of my own elimination-style tournaments and still runs low ET’s today with only minimal maintenance. It is the founding member of the group of muscle cars I call “Team ’67 Heaven.”

Not long after I bought it, I began to regret getting it in the solid color rather than waiting for the easy to find variations with the matte black top; as great as the body design is, the solid orange just seemed to lack something. At first I thought I’d dress it up by applying a Moon Eyes iron cross decal to the trunk, which admittedly looks cheesy, but not beyond the pale for something you might see on a muscle car back in the diz-ay. Unhappy with that, I then decided to just paint the top matte black myself. Although I did it with a brush it came out very well, having just enough texture to look like slightly distressed vinyl. By now I should have scraped that Moon Eyes decal off, but something about the very cheesiness of it appeals to me, so there it remains.
