Blister Pack Backup – The Diecast Overload Is Getting Crazy!

My dining room sideboard! You would think this space would be used for dining room purposes, but, nope, not in my house! 😀

Well, I’ve gotten myself into a predicament now! In an effort to keep at my hobby with such limited time and funds as I am prone to have at this time of year-and more so this year than usual-I’ve stopped buying slot cars and other expensive vintage stuff and instead turned my attention to die-casts. That didn’t help much, though, because there is so much cool stuff out there for us 1:64 guys these days: more than ever before! The proximity to Colorado Diecast (see my last post!) isn’t all; since X-mas is around the corner, all the usual stores are stocking their toy aisles to the gills! Its hard for me to talk into a Wallyworld or Target without a little peek at the Hot Wheels aisle, but I don’t usually find anything worth picking up, and if I do it might be one or two things.

Lately, though, every toy aisle I see has been a bonanza of cool stuff, either new releases or more recent ones that I haven’t picked up yet, so I can’t seem to go shopping for anything without bringing home Matchboxes and Hot Wheels! Sounds like a keen problem to have, eh?

Except that it’s really not, since this is getting crazy now! Here are some images from all over my house showing just what I’ve picked up in the last year or so…

And this doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the “deep stash,” the hundreds upon hundreds of unopened blister packaged models stuffed in boxes in my basement that go all the way back to the mid 1990’s, and some even as far back as the mid or early ‘80s! God forbid I ever open up that stash and start going through it!

ABOVE: Recent pick-ups from Black Friday’s visit to Colorado Diecast: CLOCKWISE A pair of specials, one from Easter 2013 and the other newer limited ’70s release, stay packaged for now; No sooner had I picked up and opened the ’70 GS-X in Olive Green than I found an Aqua Blue one that I naturally had to have! This quartet are going into a new egg rate; no room for them on the diorama!

So, with all this stuff stacking up on shelves and tables and every horizontal surface all over, I decided the only option I have is start opening some of these blister packages and putting some of these cool cars out on the diorama…and the only way to do that, of course, is remove some other things! So, time to get yet another 48-car case and pick some things up and lay some others down! None of this really represents an “improvement” – at least in most cases – but I think its a good idea to change some things up now and then to keep a diorama fresh, as occasional subtle changes add a touch of realism, not to mention keeping things interesting. So, this Sunday, I did just that, and here’s a look at the those subtle changes!

ABOVE, LEFT: A beautiful (and very expensive) ’69 Camaro “Real Rider” limited edition and a hard-to-find “Flying Customs” ’68 Dodge Dart stay packaged…for now RIGHT: but these beauties are headed for the layout!

Now I imagine that some of y’all might question these choices and wonder why I moved this or replaced that with that, and I would be sympathetic to any such moans and groans because I feel them too…but hey, a lot of this latest stuff is pretty cool, and after all…I gotta do something with all these cars I’m buying!

Check out the cool new stuff around town and around the track!

  1. Wow, these are tons of amazing new cars! There is lots of great vehicle variety there and at Drag City. What if you start hanging them on the walls in your main room where Drag City is. It would be awesome to be able to display them so you can see them and they can cast their joy!
