NEW BUILDS: Italian Gladiators Arrive For An Epic Battle!

Wait, WHAT?? I thought there weren’t going to be any more new builds! Well, except for “the replacements,” of course. And a few other exceptions. Right?

Yeah. I can’t stop buying and building cars; it’s the most fun aspect of this hobby to me. And while its true that having 2 fleets of 64 cars is more than enough, the actual number of cars I own now exceeds 150 and it keeps growing all the time. I’ve recently done a post about the cars I don’t race, but there are now a few being added that I don’t envision as being permanent members of the fleet but will still rotate in from time to time, either to stand in for a car that may be out for repair or rebuild, or, more commonly, for special events. In fact, I’ve just bought two cars-two very expensive bodies-expressly for a special occasion which is being planned now and will be occurring sometime this mid-summer.

Over the last month I’ve taken delivery of not one but 2 resin bodies made by a vendor in AZ modeling a car that I have long considered a contender for the title of THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CAR EVER MADE: the 1959-62 Ferrari 250GT Short Wheelbase Berlinetta. The builder of these certainly took his sweet time shipping them to me, and I had to win them both at online auctions so they cost a mint, but they are decently finished for resin kits (though one is significantly better than the other) and, to give credit where its due, they fit on to the chassis very nicely.

I done the usual decorations with racing stripes and racing number roundels and added license plates and badges (the red car stole its number 45 from the yellow Chaparral 2F, which is now racing with #91). They are both fitted with the only wheels they could be fitted with, the wires from Road Race Replicas, and both ride on full-size silicone tires.

So, why am I buying more Ferraris? Well, to match the number of Fords I have, of course! I can’t match them all (if you include the Cobras, I have a LOT of Fords) but the Italian challengers are coming in for the upcoming “FORD vs FERRARI” battle, and I intend for these beauties to face off against a pair of Cobra roadsters!

No nicknames or driver names for these cars yet…they may get them before the tournament starts, they may not-but either way, these are starting off without the intention of being raced regularly. Not sure what the future holds, but although they are little rough on the finish, I couldn’t resist adding a model of this car to my fleet collection, no matter what role they may ultimately play!
