Vexed by Numbers AGAIN: Racing Number Rigmarole

Just a brief note here, which I’m writing primarily because my OCD is so “triggered” right now that I need the therapy of writing about it…

The shop’s file of decals is extensive, but there are only so many numbers to be used…

In the past when discussing my sports car racing fleet of Thunderjets, I’ve stated several times that each car in the fleet has to have a unique racing number. Yeah. Well, that’s a great idea, but unfortunately, I’m finding out that there are only so many different types of good HO scale decals in the world. I’ve bought a lot of crappy, homemade decals that look great on the sheet but when you slide them onto the car and see what they really look like they are complete garbage.

This is one of the things that has kept me from more enthusiastically pursuing making my own decals:
I don’t want results like this

I have so many cars now that I have run through just about every 2 and 3 digit number I can find. You also have to bear in mind that the number can’t just be a number: the decal has to look good on the car, which means the color and sometimes even the typeface of the number and the background it’s on is important, and this often limits my selection even more.  As a result, I have finally had to have a talk with my OCD and accept the fact that I must start duplicating numbers.

The beginning rows of the sports car fleet roster, listed by numerical order of racing number!

I figure it’s OK since I’m now dividing the sports car fleet the same way I have the muscle car fleet, splitting my collection of 72 sports cars into 2 groups of 32 each; as long as each group doesn’t have a repeating number, I’m telling myself I can get away with it. That means my 2 of my most recent fleet additions are going to have to be strategically placed….

So…okay, swallow hard and number those cars, and note how good those numbers look and don’t think about those duplicates…c’mon, you can do this…

  1. This numbering situation is something that I hadn’t thought of and that need to number the cars. I can understand the OCD part and have no doubt you can pull off this solution. With the exciting way that Drag City has grown, at least it’s not a bad problem to have! 🙂
