Got my turf done for the carnival area! It took several days, and the glue did in fact cause major warpage to the cork, but I was able to take care of that by weighing down the area with some wood blocks after the glue had dried enough to put them down without sticking to the grass! An of course, I wanted a little warpage, because I didn’t want the area to be perfectly flat; I was looking for a little bit of natural looking undulation. It all worked out really well!

I never thought grass could be so exciting! This isn’t to say there wasn’t a misfire; the “coarse” yellow turf turned out to be too “coarse” for a blend, and the vacumm wound up sucking most of it up, so I ended up using a finer, brown grain I had leftover from my freeway embankment project to mix with the grass for a “browning affect.” The yellow turf, though, did work out in a way, in providing just enough patches here and there to look like weeds or dandelions! Although the patience required to finish this might drive a young boy crazy, I spend so many hours working these days that the timing worked out perfectly; I’d apply some glue on a weekday evening, lay down a layer of turf and retire for the night, check it the next morning and put weights on it to flatten it out when I left for work and then move the blocks and weights the following evening and repeat the process again. 4 days later, the grass for the carnival area is done!
My planning and care paid off; there was very little muss or fuss, and although I did have to run the vacuum over the track a few times to clean up some stray “grass dust,” I did not get glue all over my track or mess up anything such that I was nervous about running my next race and damaging my delicate slot cars with “construction debris!” The key to getting this right was the key to so much success in life: PATIENCE!
That came out so well and looks great! The eye dropper was a great idea, I hadn’t thought of that and will use that trick. Layering those different colors turf really make it look realistic. I do that on mine, after all, I don’t want it to look like a golf course. I think this turned out great and with the ferris wheel and even the carnie, it’s a great scene! I’m glad you think it’s exciting because, like the peeps, these details add so much, I think. I hope you liked doing it and as you do more you will take those lessons learned and it will get easier. I think this first go came out really well! Good Job!
