Remember what I so often say: “More cars is always good!” And here’s more cars! On top of the latest treasure haul from Aladdin’s Cave, here’s a few more recent additions to the HO scale Road Crew from various sources, all running on some variation of the original Aurora Thunderjet chassis!
This Willys coupe is a GAS! I mounted this purple Model Motoring reproduction on the fastest closed rivet chassis I had! Due to its tall profile and short wheelbase it is too fast to turn, making this strictly a straight-line performer, just like the drag car it is meant to be!A classic original Aurora decal on the trunk completes the vintage look. The “Glamour-Boid” in “canary yellow” – this is the first Aurora model of the ’67 T-Bird I’ve been able to acquire; it was in somewhat rough condition which is why I was able to win it. The original chassis was non-functional and the motor was fried, but that’s what spare parts are for! A chassis rebuild and some time with the buffing tools and some touch-ups from the chrome pen put it back in shape, and now this “personal luxury cruiser” is back on the road.I’m not fond of this generation of Thunderbirds in real life, but its always nice to have a piece of history in your historical toy fleet!Looks like a “secretary’s ride!” This Model Motoring ’69 Pontiac is claimed to be a GTO, but in plain white it looks more like a LeMans to me, which is exactly why I bought it: I wanted something that looked like a plain-jane car. A fair-to-midland open-rivet chassis with stock wheels and tires completes that “low-end” look.On the other hand, this neon yellow ’67 is most definitely a GTO! Yes, this is the 5th copy of this body I’ve acquired-it will be the last-and the only one to join The Road Crew. The yellow finish with the black “vinyl” top was just irresistible, and it makes a perfect bookend for the neon green ’67 Chevelle! Now here’s a beauty: the Dash Motorsports ’70 Olds 442. This is the 3rd of these I’ve bought: the rare gold one remains in the Muscle Car Racing Fleet where it will stay but the green migrated to The Road Crew some time ago and it now has a partner! This car is mounted on the only original “Tuff Ones” closed rivet chassis I have ever acquired.I got a good deal on this body and I had never seen it in white before, but it looks terrific!
Both the ’70 Oldsmobiles in the Road Crew run on “Tuff Ones” chassis with the low geared 15-toof rear pinion, but the recently added white car is mounted on the hard-to-find solid rivet version, as seen in this underside photo showing the silver finish of the electrodes
A new contender for title of the fastest member of the Crew is this scarlet red ’69 GTO Judge which was just added this morning; mounted on an open-rivet chassis with the 12 toof “Hop-Up” pinion and gear and running with a “X-mas tree” armature, this big bad muscle car is quite a handful and can barely stay on the track; even with the Jel Claws tires on the back it wants to spin out on hard acceleration. I suspect that this is similar to the feel of the real car!TIME TO GRAB A GEAR!
And so there you have it, the latest additions cruising the “HO Highway!” But there’s always more coming, and there are also some more migrations at hand to change the membership and character of both The Road Crew and the Muscle Car racing fleet! So stay tuned!
I’ve always loved those Willys and the color is fab! I’m still shocked by all the models that have been produced! All these different cool other cars when usually it seems like people only make the same old corvettes, camero’s and other muscle cars!
