The first race of new the year came to a conclusion late Sunday evening on January 23 as a tournament that began with 64 cars came down to a final battle between only 2. Although the race had more than its share of crashes and DNFs, the top cars and drivers showed well throughout, with few surprises or upsets to wow the crowd. The race was dominated by Ford powered cars, and although the #8 Porsche 904 of Weston Wirth and the #9 Corvette Grand Sport of Kyle Kendrick made it to the final elimination, the final battle came down to clash of blue-oval titans.
The “Zombie Apocalypse Doomsday Faceoff” was between Flynn “Rocket” Ryder in the #5 Ford GT-40 named “Liberty” and Sean “Sandbag” Spencer in the #55 Shelby GT350 called “Bombardier.” In the end, “Rocket” Ryder was the victor, taking home his fourth tournament trophy.

Spills and chills included a rollover from Travis Tunstall in the #16 Cobra Daytona and a dramatic launch off the corkscrew by Sagar Simpson in the #15 Shelby GT350, which landed atop an AMC Rebel staged in the paddock for an upcoming muscle car challenge. As of this writing the pit crew is still cleaning up that mess and everyone is, naturally, lawyering up. The fastest race time of the tournament was posted in Elimination round 1 by another multi-tournament winner, Jonny “Flash” Faulkner in the #13 Ford GT-40 “Alpha.” The Jumbo Tron kept the crowd apprised of the results every step of the way.

So while no real upsets occurred and no underdogs rose to the top, it was a long weekend of racing with all the excitement-and some of the heartache-Drag City Raceway is famous for!
