NEW BUILDS: A Porsche 904 Cigar Box conversion goes wild

I just recently did a post on converting the Aurora Cigar Box cars into T-jets, and here’s one I just finished! In doing so, I got more than I bargained for!

Some fellow gearheads are sometimes dismayed when I reveal that, in general, I am not a fan of Porsches. Something about them just doesn’t appeal to me. There are exceptions, though; chief among them the 904 Carrera GTS, a beautiful little jewel of a sports racer so nimble and balanced it could run rings around cars with 3x the horsepower.

The real thing

The Aurora rendition of this car is not entirely accurate; it’s a little too large and “cigar shaped” compared to the real car. But it’s not a bad model, and it looks good in its own right. This example was a prime candidate for a T-jet conversion; it was in good condition, but not perfect, and had a damaged wheel where it appeared that someone had once tried to pull it off with a pair of pliers and failed, leaving the rim crimped. As a result, I got it for a low price, and set to work drilling out the rivets.

I finished it with a brand new standard black AW Ultra-G chassis and a set of “Conrero Red” wheels by Vincent, a nice compliment to the red body. Due to the large wheel wells I used a set of grippy full-sized silicone tires from Road Race Replicas. I was shocked at the result; the car is blinding fast, so much so that it’s hard to even keep it on the track. Once tested, there was no question it was joining the fleet permanently, so I fitted it with white roundels with #80 in red, winding up with a car that looks as great as it runs.

I built this almost as an afterthought, yet it may turn out to be one of the fastest and best looking cars in the sports car fleet!
