NEW BUILDS: Plum Crazy for a ’70 Hemi ‘Cuda!

The 1970 426 hemi-powered Plymouth ‘Cuda may be the ultimate muscle car of the golden era. Regardless of which car you feel deserves that lofty claim, it’s hard to imagine a cooler ’70 Hemi ‘Cuda that one painted in “Plum Crazy” with a pearl white hocky stick stripe and an argent silver shaker hood. And here it is! This is one of the treasures I bore away from that little shop I’ve called “Aladdin’s Cave,” an unsold early Johnny Lightning Release 5 example that came in a jewel case on a chassis with no traction magnet. While its true that my muscle car racing fleet was completed many months ago, a lot of changes are taking place right now. Thus, this might have been posted as a “Replacements” entry, but I’m still not completely sure what the future holds, so I’m keeping some things under my hat for now. What I do know is that I have never seen this car for sale in this color before, and the moment I saw it, I grabbed it, because it just so happens that purple is my favorite color. I just finished the build today, mounting it on a brand new screamin’ Ultra-G chassis fitted with OS3 “Black Dragon” field magnets and Road Race Replicas axles, and finished with Vincent ATS wheels and my last remaining unused sets of Firestone RWL tires, also from RRR…because, only the best for a car like this!

To see one of these in this rare and uber-desirable color combination with all the right equipment would be to look upon a very valuable car indeed. One can understand, then, why decorated veteran Drag City muscle car racer Sullivan “SNAKE” Skeates sold his extremely fast and equally purple 1965 Pontiac GTO “Bad Intentions” in order to pony up the cash for the only car one can imagine might be a tougher customer than a GTO!

Everything any MoPar fan or any muscle car lover could want is here: “Bad Intentions II” has the 425 HP 426 “elephant” mated to a 4-speed manual with a 3.73 SureGrip rear axle and features the cosmetic upgrade of body colored “elastomeric” bumpers as well as the full gauge package, but inside, only a heater and radio add weight to a car designed to fly. Skeates then added upgrades to make this formidable car perform even better, including suspension tuning, an aluminum radiator, and a killer set of tires. “Bad Intentions” was an exceptionally beautiful car, and Skeates did very well with his ’65 GTO, winning 2 tournament titles at Drag City Mk II. However, the car seemed to run out of steam on the longer Mk. IV track, leading to what must have been a difficult decision to make this change. After all the blood, sweat, and money, “Bad Intentions II” clocked 0-60 in 5.2 seconds and did the quarter mile in 13.2 @ 112 MPH with those sticky aftermarket Firestone tires. Now, Skeates is ready to open it up on the road course. Anyone got the balls to step up and take on the ultimate muscle car???

  1. Plum Crazy is on one of the best color names I’ve heard! I don’t suppose Hammer Harrison will be taking on that beast! It will be great to see what changes you mention come to Drag City!
