On February 9, I did a post exploring some of the history of AJ’s threaded aluminum wheels and axles, and some of my experiences with them and thoughts about them. I concluded that post by mentioning that I had acquired a set of crafted modern aluminum wheels from a vendor on ePay, and planned to set them up on one of my Ultra G muscle cars to see how they worked out. Here is the result of that effort!
At the time of that writing, I hadn’t decided which car I was going to use for this experiment, so I decided it was a great excuse to buy another car! I picked a brand new AW release, a ‘72 Buick Skylark GS in “Cortez Gold” with a black top. It was a great looking model, and I was very pleased with it when it arrived.

And so the experiment began, and this video below tells the entire story of how it went, fitting these wheels and axles to an Ultra G chassis, mounting the body, putting it on the track, and running it. The results were a little surprising to me, as I did not encounter one of the problems I thought I would have, but did run into a couple of others that I had not anticipated.
Let me know your thoughts, fellow slot-heads, and tell me your own experiences!
