Meet the Fleet – Muscle Cars: ’67 Plymouth GTX Hemi “Sox & Martin”

  • BODY: Aurora Model Motoring
  • WHEELS & TIRES: Road Race Replicas

This nicely styled and very accurate recreation of the famous Sox & Martin Hemi dragster is by far the easiest version to find of the Model Motoring Plymouth GTX body. Most versions of this car are very hard to come by; although they have been recently reissued as kits, the finished cars with the fine detail are few and far between, except for this one, which is readily available. This version has a different hood than the previous versions, showing the full scoop as seen on the real car rather than the double-hump artificial vents seen on most of the other versions. Common or not, its red, white & rule color scheme was irresistible, and it was the 2nd of these bodies I added to my collection after the rare purple one.

“General Patton” with its linemate “Gaskin” at Drag City Mk II

Some race fans at Drag City scratched their heads when this one showed up; was a famous drag car from the 60’s racing on a road course? It sure looks like the real thing, but it’s not; this 1967 GTX wearing Sox & Martin livery is packing a full race 426 Hemi, but aside from that it bears no resemblance to the classic dragster; this 4-speed, disc brake equipped racer with a partially stripped interior was built for road racing. Arkansas native Bobby “Blower” Boyd spent years turning his ’67 Belvedere hardtop into just the car he wanted, a visual recreation of a famous racing car with the chops to do the style of racing he excelled at.

Raised in the country racing on dirt tracks since his teens, he’s been a Mopar fan since childhood and knew he wanted to build a car that looked like one that belonged to his boyhood heroes, and as it was under construction he decided to christen the car “General Patton” after another of his heroes. Once finished, he raced his way westward with his sights set on Drag City. He’s turned in some terrific times and won many races with this 500+ horsepower monster, and while he’s still learning to tame the beast, he’s getting better all the time, not to mention becoming a fan favorite on car recognition alone. The famous racing team of North Carolinans Ronny Sox and Buddy Martin may never have done a road course back in their day, but if they had, it’s a safe bet their car would have looked just like General Patton!
