DIORAMA DETAILS: “Easter Eggs,” Pt. I

At the periphery, in the corners, under the bridges, there’s all kinds of things going on at and around Drag City…

Truck Driver’s eye view of Interstate 8 eastbound on approach to the exit for the track. All those classic cars were just traffic on the road back in 1983!

The clandestine scrap pile below the freeway to the east of the track…

BUSTED!

A CHP watches over the impound yard at the local station at the Bear Valley Road offramp, where a drag-spec Vega was pulled off the road when its owner foolishly attempted to drive the non-street legal car to the track. Guess this car is sitting this one out!

Not abandoned, just tired

Between the diner and the Superior plant rests a distressed Ford Ranchero which still has a good small block V8 under the hood and a decent set of chrome wheels. It may be ugly, but someone loves it. An equally roughed-up AEC “Octopus” tipper lurks just outside the factory door.

What mischief is in the making?

One can only wonder what these two obviously successful business people are discussing with such intense postures next to an expensive Lincoln Mark alongside the 1st Bank of Wardglenn. My guess? A lawyer and his mistress planning her divorce!

Another day, another delivery

A working man unloads a refrigerator truck alongside the grocery store, bringing frozen goodness to hungry customers. Anyone for pizza?

The Best of the Best…

The restoration and tuning experts at the Outlaw Garage never rest. You wouldn’t see if you were just passing by, but deep inside the garage, the finishing touches are being put on a C2 Corvette Stingray that’s going to be a holy terror when it’s ready for track!

Trackside maintenance…

Pausing to look down the track at approaching racers, a burly track marshall steps away from his maintenance truck. Under the elevated section of the track is more debris of former unfortunate racers waiting to be cleared by the track’s heavy duty removal equipment.

And lastly, this is offered with no comment…

Nope, not going to help you with this one; I think you can figure out what’s going on here in the shadow of this section of the track…

  1. I truly love all these details that happy around town. There is a lot of visual excitement even when the races aren’t going on. These tableau’s are terrific and even the little hanky panky going on adds another level of surprise! I love the street seen from 83 and remember as a kid when you could still see cars like those on the road. Great Job!
